International Women in Engineering Day is a Global awareness campaign which celebrates the work of women in Engineering.
There are very few visible female role models within the engineering sector which is a factor that contributes towards the limited number of women pursuing careers in the industry. Therefore, we would like to take today to celebrate and highlight the work of some of the women who work with us at Laurasia Engineering Limited.
Angela Gracen, Key Accounts Manager and Purchasing Manager has worked in engineering for 20 years.
She said “My favourite thing about working in engineering is that every day is different, you never know what will happen. I think engineering is a very exciting industry to be in and I enjoy the challenge of problem-solving different situations that arise. Many of the roles that I have undertaken throughout my career had never been done by a woman previously and therefore it has been rewarding to prove that I am as capable at these roles as any man.”
“I believe that women have an essential role within all levels of the engineering sector which helps to lessen the bridge of a male dominated industry. I would highly recommend for more women to consider a career in this industry as it is very interesting. I have always felt accepted and supported by Laurasia and my colleagues.”
Jane Brooks, Supply Chain Coordinator has worked in engineering for 40 years.
She said “I enjoy working in the engineering industry because of the variety that it offers, it is a very fast paced and dynamic environment. I got into engineering by chance after I accepted a job next to my husband’s workplace, I’m glad I did as it’s a very exciting industry to work in.”
“I believe that the engineering industry would benefit from more women undertaking roles as it is too male orientated, in my opinion. However, with that being said I have always felt comfortable and been treated as an equal throughout my career in this male dominated sector. If the male dominated aspect is something that is putting some women off considering a career in the engineering sector, then I can assure you that it is not as intimidating as it may seem and is a very welcoming environment.”
According to The Women’s Engineering Society, women make up 16.5% of all engineers, and while this number is on the increase, we believe that there is still more that can be done in order to encourage more women to join our industry.
